The Clock of History
Networked Media Project 2 Concept

Idea

For this project, I want to build a clock that goes beyond the 24 hours in a day. I thought of many ways that the clock—both digital and analog—can be interpreted in ways other than the 24 hours itself. In one of the examples, the time is interpreted as a HEX color value. I experienced with converting the time into HSL color values, different size circles, and even morse code. But neither color, nor shapes or morse code is directly correlated with the idea of time. So I came up with a different idea: what if the time is interpreted as a year in history. For example, the time 10:45 can be the year 1045 CE, this way, the 24 hours in a day becomes 24 centuries. Although each only included the first 60 years, this transforms the scale of time represented by the clock, with each minute pointing to a specific year in history.

What's Next

For each of the year, I plan to display something significant that happened in that year in history. As there will be over 1000 years included, showing images would be difficult, while showing text could potentially work. I found a few available APIs that will provide historical events that happened in a given year, but there are years with no data. So I also might try to create a list using a crawler and filling the gaps, then write my own API to read from this long list (probably as a JSON file or a light-weight database).
